Zombie cupcakes – Halloween cakes ideas

Here we are again for our weekly appointment for this halloween dedicated dessert recipe.
Today we are gonna make cake. Relax not just a regular cake but a pumpkin cake.
No not just a plain pumpkin cake, but zombie cupcakes.

Halloween means getting dressed up in a costume and go trick or treaty.
Well that is a great idea to apply on your halloween treat too: dress them up!
Put a costume on your treats, to make them look spooky or funny.

Starting from a very simple pumpkin cake recipe I will show you how to create your very own zombie cupcakes.
So I haven’t made these cupcakes traditional way. I basically made a big cake and cut my way through.
A soft, moist pumpkin flavoured cake with chunky almonds, disguised as a spooky little zombies.

I have found a really cute eyes shaped sugar decoration to go with these, but my initial idea was to make the eye bulbs out of white chocolate buttons and dark chocolate for the
pupil. Feel free to do whatever you prefer with it.

Are you ready? Let’s get started!

zombie cupcakes

Ingredients for 6 squared zombie cupcakes

100gr cake flour
70 gr grated fresh pumpkin
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
100gr brown sugar
30gr melted butter
1 egg
2tbsp chopped almonds
pinch of cinnamon
100gr white chocolate
green food colouring

Get the zombie cupcakes to come alive!

In a medium bowl start whisking the egg and the sugar together.
Whisk well until it becomes a nice and fluffy mix.
Add 50gr of the flour and whisk for 1 minute, then add the pumpkin, and whisk again for 1 more minute.

Time to pour the butter and the almonds in the mix and whisk some more. Melted butter should not be hot.

Pour in the rest of the flour, the baking powder and a generous pinch of cinnamon.
Put the electric blender on to full power and give everything a good mix for about 1 minute, or until you start see little bubbles coming up in the batter.

I have used a rectangular shaped baking tray for this pumpkin cake.
This was for the only purpose of having the zombie cupcakes in a squared shape.

Butter up the bottom and side of the tray, then dust with some flour.
Pour in the cake mix and bake in preheated oven @190C for 35 minutes.

After this time turn off the oven but do not open it!
Let the cake cool down in it.

In the mean time you will need to prepare the chocolate that will cover the surface of you zombie cupcakes.

Chop the chocolate in pieces and melt either in the microwave or using a Bain Marie.
Mix the chocolate with some green food colouring.  The amount of colouring depends on how green you want your zombies to be.

When the cake will be cool enough take it out the tray and cut it in square chunks.
With the help of a spatula or a knife, spread the green chocolate on the cake to cover up all the surface and the sides.

Either you choose to buy them ready made or to create your own, stick the eyes on before the chocolates solidifies.

With some more melted chocolate ( I used dark chocolate) you can design the mouth or the hair also.
Use a toothpic to give it the shape you want.

Let the zombie cupcakes to set before serving.

I look forward to have your precious opinion on this!
